Service

As Catholics, the love of God compels us to a deeper and abiding love of our neighbors and to continual service to them.

Visiting the Sick & Homebound

Many volunteers take time to visit the elderly and the sick in their homes, in area nursing homes or at the hospital. On Sundays, volunteer Eucharistic Ministers will bring Communion to those who are homebound. If you would like to volunteer to participate in this most fruitful corporeal act of mercy, please contact Cookie Scherrman or your parish office.

Haiti Mission

"Love cannot remain by itself, it has no meaning.
Love has to be put into action and that action is service."
~ Mother Teresa

Background: Since 1990, members of our cluster parishes have worked with the Holy Cross Parish in Fond Verrettes, Haiti. The main focus of our help at the time was ‘Catholic Education”.  Teams visited our sister parish and brought back news of our caring, prayerful relationship with each other. Over the years our commitment has grown immensely. Following devastating storms that impacted the region, cluster members have helped rebuild schools, churches and clinics. In addition to the rebuilding efforts, members also bring hundreds of pounds of desperately needed school, clinic supplies, food and powdered milk. Supplies are also shipped via the Parish Twinning Sea Container each year in April. Parishioners have also helped establish Fonkoze, a micro-lending bank for developing countries, for the area villages. Support also continues for Deep Springs International, an organization that provides for a safe water system for homes in the region.
On September 14, 2014 Sainte Claire Clinic was dedicated. Spires of Faith Cluster Parishes raised over $65,000.00 to open this medical facility for the area. This new commitment will include salaries for the medical staff, medications, and supplies for the clinic.  Together we do make a difference!!

How to be a part of our commitment in Haiti:

  • Prayer is our greatest help and connector.
  • Monetary donations for education, clinics, safe water.
  • Gift Cards are available before Christmas to help schools, clinic, safe water.
  • Donation of items for schools and clinics: Lists of needed items are in the bulletins.
  • Join the yearly 8 day Mission Trip in early February.

The Catholic Worker House

The Catholic Worker House - 1592 Locust Street in Dubuque was opened in 1995.  The home is a shelter for homeless men. On Sundays and Mondays they open their home for ‘Hospitality Dinners’.  Everyone is welcome to come and share a dinner that is served by various groups and organization and parishes in the area. The meals for 35 to 40 guests are prepared and served  at 6:00pm by the groups.Members of our cluster parishes have prepared dinners for the home on the 3rd Monday of every month since the doors opened in’95. It is a rewarding and humbling experience for adults and students alike. The  male  voluntary staff are dedicated to helping the residents with basic needs, locating opportunities for finding a job, a compassionate heart, a listening ear, an encouraging word and shared faith. The dedicated staff is an inspiration to all of us. The House operates solely on donations.  They always say “God is good to them! For more information on the Catholic Worker House, or to volunteer, contact Cookie Scherrman.
